Respect can be shown through behavior and it can also be felt. We can act in ways which are considered respectful, yet we can also feel respect for someone and feel respected by someone. Because it is possible to act in ways that do not reflect how we really feel, the feeling of respect is more important than the behavior without the feeling. When the feeling is there, the behavior will naturally follow. Respect means a lot of different things for different people. It includes taking someone’s feelings, needs, thoughts, ideas, wishes and preferences into consideration. It also means taking all of these seriously and giving them worth and value. Going back in time, respect played an important role in survival. If we think of a small tribe wandering in the desert we can imagine that a person not respected by anyone could be left behind and die. Such a person was considered to have no worth, no importance, no value to the group. Article shared by Ankita Respect can be defined as an assumption of good faith and competence in another person or in the whole of oneself. Although respect can range from mild acceptance to complete admiration, generally when one is said to be respected, the said respect will be at the admiration end of the spectrum. Other people may or may not agree with what a person does; but they might still respect him or her because of perhaps their determination, their ambition, their selflessness or even just their good intentions. Since this is the nature of respect, one who wishes to be respected should carry out actions that are worthy enough for people to take notice of and have a positive value to the world and society in general. As respect does not drop into one's lap automatically, respect is not a right. Title: Respect is not a right; it has to be earned. Do you agree? The idea of respect is still applicable in today's world. Bill Gates had, in a combination of his intelligence, foresight and opportunities, he managed to bring Microsoft company from nothing to the multi-million, multi-national company it is today. Holding the coveted position of richest man in the world for over a decade effectively earned Gates the veneration of capitalists. Besides that, in 2000, he and his wife also established a foundation that provided funds for college scholarships for under-represented minorities, AIDS prevention, diseases rife in third world countries, and other causes. This extensive philanthropy managed to earn Gates the respect of socialists, thus covering the admiration and support of two groups with seemingly contradictory ideologies. Bill Gates is of common birth and had nothing to automatically grant him success in life. It is his intelligence and generosity that enables him to be who he is. Respect was not his birth right; he got it through honest effort. The author's comments: The work of This I Believe is made possible by individuals like you. 580 words When Macbeth proceeds on his bloody course, there is little extenuation in his brief failure of nerve. He is an ambitious man overpowered by his high aspirations, yet Shakespeare is able to elicit feelings of sympathy for him from the audience. Despite the evil of his actions, he does not arouse the distaste audiences reserve for such villains as Iago and Cornwall. This may be because Macbeth is not evil incarnate but a human being who has sinned. Moreover, audiences are as much affected by what Macbeth says about his actions as by the deeds themselves. Both substance and setting emphasize the great evil, but Macbeth does not go about his foul business easily. He knows what he is doing, and his agonizing reflections show a person increasingly losing control over his own moral destiny. As Macbeth degenerates, he becomes more deluded about his invulnerability and more emboldened. What he gains in will and confidence is counterbalanced and eventually toppled by the iniquitous weight of the events he set in motion and felt he had to perpetuate. When he dies, he seems almost to be released from the imprisonment of his own evil. The responsibility cannot be shifted to Lady Macbeth, despite her goading. In a way, she is merely acting out the role of the good wife, encouraging her husband to do what she believes to be in his best interests. She is a catalyst and supporter, but she does not make the grim decision, and Macbeth never tries to lay the blame on her. Powerful, tragic, romantic, and action packed: these are only a few words to describe the many plays written by the late, great William Shakespeare. Whether it was a tale of love or a king's rise to power, Shakespeare's plays were, and still are, always top-notch and so full of meaning. Every one of Shakespeare's plays has certain themes to them that make them unique and well loved even today; no one can master powerful and controversial themes like Shakespeare did. Out of all of these plays, one play stands alone: Macbeth. The story is about a man who is very violent and wants to be king of Scotland. With the help of his power hungry wife, Lady Macbeth, he kills the good King Duncan and gets his wish, but is forced to contend to the vengeful son of Duncan, Malcolm, and Malcolm's friend Macduff. Throughout the play, these characters are shown wielding ambition, and the choices they make based on their desires determines the fate of Scotland and of Macbeth himself. The characters Shakespeare creates to desire certain things change the play drastically and bring it to its overwhelming conclusion. Through Macbeth, Malcolm and Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare makes violence, revenge and power go hand in hand with ambition to show the audience how far a determined person will go to achieve their goals. Macbeth is not fully to blame for his ambition clouding his judgment since the audience knows that Lady Macbeth has him kill Duncan so she can be Queen; this ambition represents power. While Macbeth is to blame for all he has done to his country, his wife started a chain reaction that sent Macbeth down this dark path. Had Macbeth not told his wife about the prophecies, she would not have become so obsessed with power and she would not have sent her husband to kill Duncan so she could be Queen faster…and all of Macbeth's victims would be alive and well. Lady Macbeth wants so desperately to gain power, she begs of the immortals to "unsex me here and fill me from the crown to the toe top-full of direst cruelty!" (1.5.41-43). Lady Macbeth is asking the spirits (or gods…I'm not quite sure; it's pretty vague) to make her cruel and unforgiving so she can do the terrible deed of killing Duncan. This shows how evil and impatient Lady Macbeth is; had she waited for Duncan to promote Macbeth, she could have been Queen without her husband having to kill anyone, Macbeth would still have been a good person, and they would not have had to suffer so much guilt for all they did. Later, after Lady Macbeth drugs the guards, she boasts about the drugs "that which hath made them drunk hath made me bold; What hath quenched them hath given me fire." Now Lady Macbeth is almost certain that they will not fail; her ambition has clouded her better judgment and ignored the possibility of guilt haunting her and her husband. This ambition, the ambition of power, is by far the most deadly of all ambitions. If you want power so badly and very quickly, you forget about all the consequences that might come from it. In Lady Macbeth's case, her consequence for her actions was the loss of her sanity and restless nights thinking about what she made her husband do, eventually causing her to take her own life. This being said, I think it is safe to say that too much ambition is NOT a promise of power or a sign of greatness. This play is no exception to the fact that relationships are important and affect the story of Shakespeare’s plays. If it was not for the doomed relationship between the witches and Macbeth the play might not have been a tragedy at all. This bond between Macbeth and these minsters of evil serves as the cornerstone of the entire play and a crucial catalyst to the plot. It could be said that the relationship was forged before the fatal meeting and started to decide the fate of the plot and of Macbeth. Macbeth is also very fond of the witches as they awaken in him his dormant vaulting ambition to be king. He cannot forget the meeting that he had with them: “My thought, whose murder is yet but fantastical, shakes so my very single state of man that function is smothered in surmise, and is but what is not”. Macbeth very quickly believes whole heartily without any shred of proof. it is unimaginable how the witches could manipulate one who is supposed to be “Valliant”. Macbeth trusts in the witches to an extent that he stars to suspect people who are close to him, even his brother in arms: “We would spend it in some words upon that business. if you would grant the time ”. It is quite clear that Macbeth has become increasingly paranoid due to his evolving relationship with the three weird sisters. To show the audience how the relationship between Macbeth and the witches is important to the plot of the play he breaks down their relationship at the climax of the play: “I looked toward Birnam, and anon methought the wood began to move”. The first brutal betrayal by the witches came at a time when Macbeth was already in turmoil due to the death of his partner in greatness. It is at this moment when an epiphany strikes Macbeth and shows him the true nature of the witches in which he placed so much of his trust: “I pull in resolution, and begin to doubt the equivocation of the fiend that lies like truth” . If you are thinking of applying for completely different courses at different universities (eg Physics and Accounting, or Biology and Music) we’d encourage you to reconsider. It’s important to choose a subject area that you really want to study, and focus on that one area when making your applications. Also, you can only write one personal statement which will be seen by all the universities to which you apply, so it needs to be relevant for all your courses. Tutors at Oxford are only interested in your academic ability and potential. They want to see that you are truly committed to the subject or subjects you want to study at university but it’s not enough just to say that you have a passion for something: you need to show tutors how you have engaged with your subject, above and beyond whatever you have studied at school or college. This can include any relevant extracurricular activities. Ask a teacher to read through what you’ve written, listen to their feedback and then make any updates that they suggest. You may need two or three tries to get it right. Don’t keep writing and rewriting your statement though, as it is more important to keep up with your school or college work, and to explore your subject with wider reading. (See suggested reading and resources .) People sometimes think that there is a trick to writing a personal statement for Oxford, or that we are looking for some special secret formula, but this is not the case. Writing a personal statement for Oxford is no different from writing a personal statement for any other university. In fact it’s important to remember that the same wording will be seen by all the universities you apply to and should therefore focus on the course you want to study, not the universities themselves. Please read this helpful advice from UCAS about writing your personal statement . Think about talking to your friends about what you want to study at university: what would you tell them? What have you read or watched or seen that has inspired you? (This might have been at school, at home, in a museum, on TV, in a book, on YouTube or a podcast or anywhere else.) Why was it interesting? What do you want to find out next? What did you do? Try to avoid writing your personal statement as though you are ticking things off a list. There is no checklist of required achievements, and tutors will not just scan what you have written to look for key words or phrases. Tutors will read your personal statement to try to understand what has motivated you to apply for their course. It’s a good idea to evaluate your experiences, to show what you have learned from them and how they have helped develop your understanding of your subject. To sum up, be yourself and write honestly about your experiences. Use your own voice, because that is who you are, and the universities are interested in you, not an ideal text based on a “how to write a personal statement” article…
In these 4,000 characters you are trying to sell yourself to the university. A perfect product proposer is all about how great that thing is, and it’s the same with your personal statement. You should write about your experiences, your knowledge and your future plans. You should NOT write, “I wanted to learn Spanish but I gave it up after a week” or “I am not very good at maths, but I think this is understandable since I hate it so much.” Applying for Teacher Education in Scotland? If you're applying to study Teacher Education in Scotland, you'll need to make your application through the UCAS Undergraduate scheme. Read dedicated Whether you’re applying for an undergraduate school or trying to get into graduate programs, many applications require a letter of intent or personal statement. Personal statements are one of the most important parts of the application and sometimes the deciding factor for admission. Every college is different, so each personal statement should be different. Many students try to get away with having a universal essay but admissions departments will notice. (Image: Polka Dot/Thinkstock) One of the worst things you can do is bore the admission officer. Make yourself memorable by telling a story about something distinctive from a creative or different angle. Make sure you read the directions carefully. One of the biggest red flags for an admissions office are students who don’t adhere to word limitations. Don’t give them a reason to throw out your application. “Nothing makes someone fall in love like a good story. It does not have to be the next Pulitzer winner,” Reid said. “For college, one essay I wrote was about how I have often felt like my life was a movie and how Dirty Dancing (yes, the movie) changed my life. My sister who currently goes to Princeton even wrote about killing a fly!” He works in the Annenberg School for Communication admissions office and deals with prospective students daily. H owever, she advises students to avoid rambling: “Some try to tell you their life story,” she continues, “sometimes this can be quite useful, but it needs to be relevant rambling, it needs to tell admissions tutors why you have decided on a particular subject.” DON’T leave it until the last minute – try to submit the application before Christmas DO show your teachers a draft first – so you will know what to change in plenty of time 'The secret to getting ahead is getting started'. Whether, the American writer Mark Twain said this or not is up for debate. What is not up for debate, however, is the truth behind the expression, especially when it comes to personal statement writing. It’s important to remember that not only will your personal statement be used in the initial process of making an offer, it could also be used at the end of the application cycle if you miss the grade requirements. Pick some key extra-curricular activities and think about the skills they give you and feed that into what you are doing. “Write about what makes you unique," he continues, "only you know your unique selling points. Ask yourself ‘what makes me different, what will I bring to the university and what will I get out of it?’” Jeff Pence knows the best way for his 7th grade English students to improve their writing is to do more of it. The two consortia delivering the new assessments under the Common Core State Standards are reviewing machine-grading but have not committed to it. With the technology, he has been able to assign an essay a week and individualize instruction efficiently. "I feel it's pretty accurate," Mr. Pence said. "Is it perfect? No. But when I reach that 67th essay, I'm not real accurate, either. As a team, we are pretty good." Still, critics of essay-grading software, such as Les Perelman, want academic researchers to have broader access to vendors' products to evaluate their merit. Now retired, the former director of the MIT Writing Across the Curriculum program has studied some of the devices and was able to get a high score from one with an essay of gibberish. With his new company LightSide, in Pittsburgh, owner Elijah Mayfield said his data-driven approach to automated writing assessment sets itself apart from other products on the market. But always remember that the satisfaction that you will get at the end, you will remember forever. I`m sure that everyone of us has dreams, and more often they are quite unreal, like, I want a million dollars, or a sport car, or I want that my husband will be a prince on a white horse. But my next question will be – so what do YOU do just to achieve them? So my first advice is – choose five of your most important dreams, write them down in your copybook (each dream on a new page), and then, under the each of a dream make a plan how you want to achieve it. For example, if you want a million dollars (don`t dream that you will find them on the street), so how are you going to earn them, or how are you going to collect them, if you know an economic well, so why not put out them. And as all girls want to find a prince, think, are you sure that you look like a princess, so maybe it`s a perfect time to start visiting the gym? We were always taught, that we have to want more than we have. But very often I can hear that people say “ Oh, yes, I want it, but I will never get it” or “It`s impossible”. You can be sure, if you think so, then you will never get it at all. Or, in my opinion, if you still don’t have it, then you just don’t need it. 754 words Winter Dreams Essay - In F. If you can dream it, you can become it”. As the saying goes by William A. Ward. I am sure that you have understood the topic, the topic is, DREAMS. Dreams are nothing but the thoughts and ideas of ones mind. They predict the character of the person. If ones thoughts are good they he/she will see good dreams and if someone’s thoughts are bad they he/she will se bad dreams. From the above line it is clear that dreams are good or bad, intentions of people. [tags: essays research papers] All of us dream, several times at night. It is believed by some that we sleep in order that we may dream. Dreams can come true if somebody makes them true, as the saying goes, “A dream is just a dream, unless you make it come true”. Dreams provide us the actual picture of our thoughts. Dreams may tell us about any physical event which took place with us or which is going to happen with us. The dream is trying to inform the dreamer about his condition in any walk of life. Basically, we can dream about anything logical or illogical, fictious or non-fictious and reasonable or unreasonable. 1202 words Most people have no idea how to achieve their dreams. What they possess is a vague notion that there is something they would like to do someday or someone they would like to become. But they don’t know how to get from here to there. If that describes you, then you’ll be glad to know that there really is hope. OK, you may be saying to yourself, I’ve got a dream. I think it’s worth pursuing. Now what? How can I know that my odds are good for achieving it? Once you do these six things to put yourself in the best possible position to receive a dream, focus on discovering your dream. As you do, keep in mind the words of my agent, Matt Yates, who says, “A dream is what you desire if anything and everything is possible.” My desire is to be like one of those encouraging teachers to you. I want to prepare you to put your dream to the test so you can actually achieve it. How? I believe that if you know the right questions to ask yourself, and if you can answer these questions in an affirmative way, you will have an excellent chance of being able to achieve your dreams. The more questions you can answer positively, the greater the likelihood of success! What is your dream? Will you achieve your dream in your lifetime? I'm certain that you desire to. I'm sure you hope you will. But will you actually do it? What odds would you give yourself? One in five? One in a hundred? One in a million? How can you tell whether your chances are good or whether your dream will always remain exactly that—a dream? And are you willing to put it to the test? If these aren’t good dreams—valid ones worthy of a person’s life—then what are? I want you to know that there’s good news. You can find or recapture your dreams. And they can be big dreams. not that all dreams have to be huge to be worth pursuing. They just need to be bigger than you are. As actress Josie Bisset remarked, “Dreams come a size too big so we can grow into them.” Some people have been discouraged from dreaming by others. Many people have had their dreams knocked right out of them! The world is filled with dream crushers and idea killers. 622 words Beowulf and Batman, however different their backgrounds and settings may be, still posses the classic characteristics of a classic hero. They exude strength, they abide by a code of ethics, and both fight evil. Although humility is now a favorable quality instead of arrogance, the comparison between both figures clearly shows their similarities. Unfortunately, media today gives the impression that this violence is normal. This message, which all these forms of entertainment are sending out, is what is causing the real violence in society. People do not know how to express their feelings, so they follow in the footsteps of their heroes. The first and most notable similarity is drinking. King Hrothgar built a giant mead-hall, namely Heorot, to accommodate his celebrations. Throughout Beowulf it can be seen that celebrations of any kind are always accompanied by drinking. Drinking is just present today as it was thousands of years ago. People today always include drinking in their celebrations, whether it be a birthday, anniversary, or marriage. Heorot is nothing more than a tremendous bar. The festivities of the warriors in Beowulfs time can be seen every night in any local bar or pub. On the feild he is a monster but outside of the pitch Messi is a great preson. He donates millions of dollars to shelters in hospitals. He lives in a beautiful mansion in Spain. And he is always a good person even after a bad loss. After winning the Ballon d’Or for the fourth time in January 2013, Messi said: – Lionel Messi Messi has frequently been the target of other football clubs with big transfer budgets, but he has remained loyal to Barcelona FC. He is one of the highest paid footballers in the world. His base salary is estimated at €16 million net a year, until 2018. His net wealth is estimated at €110m. “I do not care about the Golden Ball. I am just upset by the wasted chances. We had the best chances. We knew we could not dominate the game but we knew what we wanted to do. Right now I do not care about my prize. I just wanted to lift the cup and bring it to Argentina. The pain is very great.” He began playing from an early age, and his talent was soon apparent. However, at the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). This was a condition that stunted growth and required expensive medical treatment, including the use of the drug Human growth hormone. At the end of 2012, Messi turned down a very lucrative offer to play for an unnamed Russian side. It would have given Messi a salary of €20 million a year and made Messi the most expensive player in the world (Barcelona would have been paid €250million). He turned down the offer because he was unsure if he would be playing in major European championships and the difficulties in moving to Russia. Instead, he signed a contract with Barcelona until the end of 1918. When asked about moving to the English Premier League, Messi revealed his sense of commitment to Barcelona. At the start of 2013, in club football, Messi has scored 292 goals from a total of 359 appearances, and in international football, 31 goals from 76 appearances. “Messi has his personality and I have mine. He has his game and I have mine. I also play in a big club like him. We are different in every aspect. But right now, he is the best.” In the 2010 World Cup, Messi wore the number 10 shirt and played well to help Argentina reach the quarter-finals, but Messi struggled to score and Argentina disappointingly lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarter-final. Messi has admitted he is desperate to play in a world cup final. Success for Messi in the World Cup would be the last test of greatness. Pele. by contrast, was part of Brazil’s three times winning World Cup side ’58, ’62 and ’70. In June 2016, a very disappointed Messi announced his retirement from international football, after missing a penalty as Argentina got knocked out of the Copa America final. However, Messi later reversed decision, saying he loved playing for Argentina too much, and “I see there are many problems in Argentinian football and I don’t intend to create another one.” “I have changed nothing, my style of play is still that of a child. I know that above all it is my job and that I should approach it in another way, but one must not lose sight of the fact that football is a game. It is imperative one plays to amuse oneself, to be happy. That is what children do and I do the same thing.” (total Barca) |
